Garjia Temple

Perched atop a small hillock overlooking the Kosi River, Girija Mata Temple is a divine temple and one of the holiest temple in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It is a sacred shakti shrine with Girija Mata Devi. It is believed that Garjiya Devi is the incarnation of Goddess Parvati, daughter of the king of mountains, Giriraj. It is located at the border of the village called Girjiya close to Ramnagar. Situated 14 kms from the Corbett National Park, the temple is easily reachable by car. Autos and taxis are also available to reach the temple. It was discovered in the year 1840 by the erstwhile rulers of Ramnagar. Since then it has undergone changes from time to time.

At the foot of the temple is a cave which houses a Shiva Temple. A flight of 72 stairs leads all the way to the sanctum sanctorum. The view from the top of the temple is very beautiful. It offers amazing views of the pristine Kosi river and its lush green surroundings. There are small shops that sells souvenirs and snacks. The temple is open for devotees all through the year except during monsoons when the river overflows with water.

The temple is illuminated by the light of the earthen lamps during Karthik Poornima and a big fair is held every year. Thousands of devotees throng the temple at this time of the year. A visit to this sacred temple is highly recommended and seek divine blessings.
